Police searching for suspect after officer injured in altercation near Eskimos gameMore

The suspect accused of stabbing a police officer before crashing a speeding U-Haul van into a crowd of people in Edmonton, Canada, had come to the country from Somalia trying to claim refugee status, police revealed.

Documents show Abdulahi Sharif, 30, is facing a total of eleven charges: five counts of attempted murder, four counts of risky driving causing bodily harm while fleeing police, and one charge each of unsafe driving, and possession of a weapon.

Edmonton police Sgt. Michael Elliott, speaking on behalf of the Alberta Federation of Police Associations, said the public reaction to the attack will be critical.

A Somali-born refugee has been charged with five counts of attempted murder in connection with a weekend attack in Edmonton, Alberta.

Sharif has been remanded, and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning.

The incident in Edmonton began when a Chevy Malibu slammed into a police officer standing in front of a football stadium at about 8:15 p.m. (0215 Sunday GMT), hitting him with enough force to send him flying into the air. The man got out of his vehicle and then was thrown on the police officer by striking him several blows with a knife before fleeing on foot.

Police officer attacked with vehicle and knife while pedestrians targeted in high-speed chase in western city of Edmonton. Knecht said the truck deliberately hit four pedestrians.

Chernyk is out of hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Police arrested the suspect after the vehicle flipped over during the pursuit.

OJ Simpson could be released from prison as early as Sunday
Simpson spent nine years in prison for armed robbery and kidnapping after a 2008 incident with memorabilia dealers. It was not immediately known who picked Simpson up or where he was heading after being freed.

Of the four pedestrians, two suffered head injuries including a skull fracture.

Police said that at this time, the events in Edmonton appear to be isolated.

Sharif was accused of stabbing 48-year-old Constable Mike Chernyk, after Sharif ran into the police officer with his Chevy Malibu vehicle.

When police noticed that the name on the driver's license was similar to that of the registered owner of the white Malibu, the man took off toward downtown Edmonton, according to the police account. They then used a stun gun on the driver and took him into custody. Two more remain in hospital as of Sunday.

Investigators determined at that time that he did not pose a threat.

"No shots were fired".

While the policeman did not have any life-threatening injuries, the condition of the pedestrians was not known, said the BBC, citing police.

Opposition Conservative parliamentarian Michelle Rempel said the incident raised questions about how police and immigration officials share information.
