After going days without mentioning Puerto Rico following Maria, however, administration officials have attempted to play catchup, holding numerous press conferences to describe their relief efforts; Trump now manages to get in a mention of Puerto Rico at almost every public event.

Major U.S. labor unions are organizing truck drivers to help with relief efforts in Puerto Rico as the island continues to grapple with the devastation wrought by Hurricane Maria last week.

The president tweeted over twenty times yesterday, beginning with an attack on San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz and "lazy" Puerto Ricans who want "everything to be done for them", following it up with an attack on the free press and Democrats six hours later.

The Trump administration has been defending it response to the hurricane attacking the Puerto Rican officials, and accusing the "fake news media" of attempts to undermine relief efforts.

Cruz told Stephanopoulos on Sunday she would still meet Trump.

The mayor of San Juan is answering a Twitter attack by President Donald Trump by calling for a united focus on helping people in Puerto Rico after the US territory was devastated by Hurricane Maria.

In a separate tweet, he added, "She (Cruz) has been working 24/7".

It's been more than a week since Hurricane Maria swept through Puerto Rico.

Sanders says that, due to some of Trump's past comments, he thinks "we have a right to be suspect that he is treating the people of Puerto Rico in a different way than he has treated the people of Texas or Florida".

Since the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump has repeatedly used the term "fake news" largely for any coverage criticizing him or his allies.

"To the people of Puerto Rico: Do not believe the [Fake News]", the president tweeted.

"It's good we're doing things like this, but help needs to come from a higher level than just us", he said.

While Trump has called the federal response "amazing", the mayor has appealed publicly to Trump by name to speed up the delivery of food, water, medicine and fuel, and "to make sure somebody is in charge that is up to the task of saving lives". This is the time to show our "true colors". "This is a point where we can not look at small differences, we can not establish differences based on politics".

The reality of the humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico, however, has rarely lined up with the Trump administration's optimistic takes on the situation.

President Donald Trump plans to tour Puerto Rico Tuesday, stating in his weekly address, "It;s getting better".

On Friday, September 29th, FEMA reported more than 10,000 federal staff and 800 FEMA personnel were on the ground in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands in response and recovery operations from hurricanes Maria and Irma.
