Supreme Court Cancels Travel Ban Hearing Date, Orders Both Sides to Reassess

White House declines to confirm or deny new travel ban

As part of the presidential proclamation signed on Sunday, the U.S. will also bar the entry of certain Venezuelan government officials and their immediate families.

The Supreme Court has canceled oral arguments on President Donald Trump's travel ban and refugee ban - originally scheduled for October 10 - as both sides of the case work to file briefs on the impact of a new immigration order from the Trump administration, issued Sunday. The new restrictions replace the earlier ones that had gotten Trump embroiled in political and legal battles after they came across as a move to block entry of Muslims into the country. The remaining eight are now subject to the new restrictions until they make changes to bring them into compliance. Of the six, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen are on the new list, but Sudan has been dropped. For example, while Iran remains on the list of countries with travel restrictions, student and exchange visas are an exception. Such additional scrutiny will also be required for Somali citizens applying for all non-immigrant visas.

North Korea's authoritarian government doesn't allow most of its 24 million people to travel overseas, except in special cases such as for jobs that bring in foreign currency or participation in sporting events.

Critics have accused Trump of overstepping his legal authority and violating the U.S. Constitution's protections against religious bias each time he has ordered new travel restrictions.

On Saturday, North Korea's foreign minister Ri Yong-ho said a strike against the US mainland was "inevitable" after Trump called North Korean leader Kim Jong-un "Rocket Man" and threatened to "totally destroy" his nation. Last week, Kim called Trump a "mentally deranged USA dotard" in response to Trump's threats to "totally destroy" the North. Trump later said Kim is "obviously a madman who doesn't mind starving or killing his people".

President Nicolas Maduro has called those sanctions a financial blockade against the country, which is grappling with triple-digit inflation and chronic product shortages as its economy unravels.

The American Civil Liberties Union rights group said the addition of the new countries "doesn't obfuscate the real fact that the administration's order is still a Muslim ban".

The Department of Homeland Security said on its website that the latest restrictions announced by the president "will protect Americans and allow DHS to better keep terrorists and criminals from entering our country".

A day after the Trump administration released a new travel ban policy, the Supreme Court removed the argument date for the president's old travel ban case from its calendar.

The briefs are due October 5 and the court said for now it is removing from its oral argument calendar a hearing scheduled for October 10.
