Mormon-owned BYU lifts ban on selling Coca-Cola

BYU will now sell caffeinated beverages on campus

Utah's Brigham Young University (BYU) has lifted its decades-long ban on the sale of caffeinated drinks on campus. Officials said the change is based on student requests, is not financially motivated and does not change the university's exclusive contract with Coca-Cola Co. Brigham Young will still not sell coffee or highly caffeinated energy drinks.

The Church-owned LDS Business College began selling caffeinated soft drinks in June, according to the The Daily Universe.

Explaining the decision, Dean Wright, the director of BYU's dining services, said that the goal of the change is "simply working to meet the preferences of our customers".

At the time of the church announcement in 2012, Jenkins said the school didn't sell caffeinated drinks because there had not "been a demand for it".

In 2012, the Church issued a press release that was explicit: "the Church revelation spelling out health practices. does not mention the use of caffeine".

ME election system not targeted by Russian hackers
There is also a spring election in April where an open seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court will be filled. The state has voted for the Democratic presidential candidate in seven consecutive presidential elections.

Yes, the BYU community drank to their hearts' content. This decision comes as a delight to many students on the campus, which has been caffeine free since the mid-1950s. "The Church's health guidelines prohibit alcoholic drinks, smoking or chewing of tobacco, and "hot drinks" - taught by Church leaders to refer specifically to tea and coffee", a post on Mormonnewsroom.org said.

There was even a campus moments story made for this sacred, caffeinated day.

The same can't be said of the university's campus in Rexburg.

While caffeine is not explicitly banned by the Mormon church, adherents to the faith are encouraged to avoid it.

"Did I just buy the first-ever caffeinated Coke Zero Sugar sold in #BYU's Wilkinson Student Center?" he tweeted.
