ME election system not targeted by Russian hackers

Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman

Secretary of State Kim Wyman said in a statement that the Department of Homeland security informed her office Friday of the attempted breach, of which state officials had already been aware. Most of the hacks were not successful, though it's not clear which states got fucked.

States that told The Associated Press they had been targeted include Alabama, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Wisconsin's voter registration system was unsuccessfully targeted by Russian hackers before last year's election, the Wisconsin Elections Commission said Friday.

The only aspect of Maine's election system that is accessible via the internet is the Central Voter Registration database, and it is protected by user passwords, a firewall and regular monitoring by in-house cybersecurity staff, the department said. The move comes as federal investigators, and the Senate Judiciary Committee, investigate Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election. Officials are now working to improve voter security in future elections.

Turkey warns Iraq: Kurdish referendum security threat
The KRG has ignored increasing calls for the cancelation of the referendum, saying the vote would go ahead as planned. On Friday, however, Mr Barzani dismissed alternatives offered by the USA to avert the referendum.

Washington state was not hit in that effort, which involved a private corporation that provided election services for some states, the Secretary of State's Office has said. The state has voted for the Democratic presidential candidate in seven consecutive presidential elections. Haas testified at that hearing that Wisconsin had not been notified of any hacking attempt by Homeland Security and concluded that Wisconsin was not a target.

Trump won Wisconsin by fewer than 23,000 votes.

A draft is expected to be done in December with a final plan to be done in early 2018.

"According to Homeland Security, we were not attacked, probed, breached, infiltrated or penetrated", Secretary of State Wayne Williams said. There is also a spring election in April where an open seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court will be filled.
