The four countries quietly expanding their nuclear arsenals

The United Nations General Assembly

Amid deepening anxiety over the risk of war between the United States and North Korea, much of the global community is embracing the new Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

Some critics of the treaty, including the United States and its close Western allies, publicly rejected the entire effort, calling it misguided and reckless, particularly when North Korea is threatening a nuclear-tipped missile strike on American soil.

BACKED a United Nations treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons, despite objections to the treaty from Nato.

However, for the Treaty to enter into force, it must be ratified by all the 44 States that formally participated in the 1996 session of the Conference on Disarmament and possessed nuclear power or research reactors at the time.

In addition, eight other countries (the United States, Russia, Britain, China, France, Israel, India, and Pakistan) possess a total of roughly 15,000 nuclear weapons, and none of them seems willing to get rid of them.

"The world will only be safe if we eliminate all weapons of mass destruction. As a signatory, the Philippines stands ready to contribute to the work ahead", he added.

Most notably, the U.S. is expected to spend US$400 billion between 2017 and 2026 on maintaining and comprehensively updating its nuclear forces.

In iOS 11 that is made slightly easier, because you can now shift the keyboard to the left or the right and make it smaller. Apple Maps now have indoor maps for major airports and shopping centres, and there's a DND mode while driving.

The treaty was adopted on 7 of July in the year 2017. It will keep us on track for achieving our goal of a world in which nuclear weapons exist only in movies or books. Guyana, the Vatican and Thailand are expected to provide signed ratification copies later in the day.

Jean-Yves Le Drian, foreign minister of official nuclear power France, called the Treaty "wishful thinking... nearly irresponsible".

"The heroic survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki - the hibakusha - continue to remind us of the devastating humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons", Guterres said. If they follow through by ratifying it, the treaty will take effect.

Protesters hold anti-nuclear flags upon the arrival of the Pacific Egret cargo vessel, left in background, carrying MOX, a mixture of plutonium and uranium fuel, at Takahama nuclear power plant in Takahama, western Japan, Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017.

Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Moscow would not ratify the nuclear weapons ban treaty as it runs counter to the country's national interests.

The United States and the other nuclear-armed states urged other countries not to sign it.
