Rohingya Flee Myanmar Violence at Mercy of Traffickers, Warns UN

The 'ethnic cleansing' of the Rohingya

The proposals included an immediate end to violence against Rohingya Muslims, creation of "safe zones" in Myanmar for them and urgent humanitarian assistance for the refugees from OIC countries until they can return to Myanmar.

Human rights monitors and fleeing Rohingya say the army and Rakhine Buddhist vigilantes have mounted a campaign of arson aimed at driving out the Muslim population.

Dozens of midwives have been deployed to camps in Bangladesh to deliver babies and help young mothers who are among the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees who have fled across the border from Myanmar and are now living in squalid settlements.

More than 400,000 Rohingya have fled from Myanmar (also known as Burma) to Bangladesh since August 25.

The Rohingya crisis is a "textbook example ethnic cleansing", a top United Nations official recently said.

"We have told Myanmar that they will have to take back their citizens".

Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims, described by the United Nations as the most persecuted minority in the world, fled their homes in Rakhine state recently to escape a military crackdown. The worldwide community, for its part, should extend support to Rohingya refugees living in harsh conditions.

On September 14, India sent 53 tonnes of relief material to Bangladesh for Rohingyas, who poured into that country following the violence in Myanmar.

The Rohingya exodus began August 25, after Rohingya insurgent attacks on police set off a military crackdown.

The government has recently raised "serious concern" over reports of renewed violence and attacks in Myanmar and extended its "strong" support to the Myanmarese government at this "challenging moment".

"Maritime surveillance aircraft, including Dornier, hovercraft and patrolling ships of the border guarding forces have been activated in the entire region to prevent the influx of Rohingya, who are seen as a major threat to national security by the centre", a senior government official was quoted as saying by India Today.

In her Tuesday speech, Suu Kyi condemned abuses and said all violators would be punished, adding that she was committed to the restoration of peace and the rule of law.

The alleged violent attacks have led to an exodus of Rohingya tribals from the western Rakhine state in that country to India and Bangladesh.
