Egypt's Sisi meets Israeli PM at United Nations for first public talks

Sisi tells Netanyahu he wants to assist Israeli Palestinian peace efforts

The calls between Egypt and Hamas angered Israel.

The two met on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly to discuss the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, which has been at a standstill since 2014, the Egyptian presidency said in a statement Tuesday.

According to sources quoted in Israeli media, several other Egyptian officials participated in the meeting, including Foreign Minister Samah Shukry, Intelligence chief Khaled Fauzi, and Abbas Camel, the director of Sisi's office.

The two leaders discussed resuming aid during the Wednesday meeting, according to Reuters.

The Prime Minister's Office said that Netanyahu met with the Egyptian president for an hour and a half and that the two men had a comprehensive conversation about the problems in the region: "President el-Sisi expressed his desire to assist in efforts to achieve peace between Israel and the Palestinians and in the region", the statement said.

Sisi has been involved in secret talks with the Israeli premier in the past.

Abbas's internationally recognised Palestinian Authority is located in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, but it has had no control in Gaza for a decade - after the Islamist movement Hamas seized the territory in a near civil war in 2007.

Since al-Sisi's rise to power, there has been an improvement in Israeli-Egyptian relations, especially in terms of security.

Trump's predecessor Barack Obama had temporarily frozen military aid to Egypt following a deadly crackdown on Morsi's supporters.

Last month, Egypt described the U.S. decision to reduce aid as a "misguided decision given the nature of the strategic relations" that have bound the two countries for four decades.

Netanyahu - speaking at an event earlier this month - noted that the current shift is more profound than the one after the signing of the 1993 Oslo Accords with the Palestinians, and the 1994 Israeli peace treaty with Jordan. The objective is "to reach a just solution based on the principle of the two-state solution and worldwide decisions".
